Catching up Spring to Summer

Spring IMG_0031It’s technically still spring, so I spent most of yesterday cleaning out my closet. Storage is always a problem in my apartment, so I’m pretty good at throwing things away a little at a time – or so I thought. I was putting something away, looked up at a stack of t-shirts, and realized I could easily give half of them away – then one stack led to another. A few months ago, my friend sent me an article from organizational consultant, Marie Kondo. I only gave it a cursory read through then, but I remembered the advice that you should determine if the objects you live with “spark joy” – if they don’t then you should let them go. It wasn’t always easy to make up my mind – what didn’t spark joy, sparked genuine laughter (oh the early aughts…) – but it helped me weed out the things I was keeping just because. Now I have three enormous bags destined for Housing Works,  I can’t stop opening my closet to admire the space created. I swear I can see my clothes breathing easier, and I am too. Working along those lines, here are a few  links that I’ve been waiting to share that sparked some joy:

Heidi Swanson followed up her inspiring post on writing a cookbook proposal with this post on making a cookbook.

There’s something comforting about looking at other people processes because I can’t stop reading Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey – equal parts inspiration and procrastination.

If you’re not traveling this summer or even if you are, Food Republic pulled together the best food and travel instagram accounts to follow. Though I hardly think they’ll produce anything as stylish as these vintage air hostess uniforms.

I’ve also been ballet obsessed – partly because I haven’t been in awhile and partly because I haven’t the summer makes everything shimmery.

My new favorite feed is from Pacific Northwest Ballet though I love this new campaign from Boston Ballet. There’s also the Justin Peck documentary Ballet 422.

I’ve written a few times about one of my favorite neighborhood bakery’s One Girl Cookies and now you can see them here. If you like the recipe, then check out their book here.

If you can’t make it to the Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life show at the New York Botanical Garden this summer, you can enjoy these images of Frida at home. There’s also the Basquiat:The Unknown Notebooks exhibit at BMA and Fata Morgana by Teresita Fernández.

And finally, Chimpanzees can cook.  Chimpanzees. Can. Cook.
